Where Michigan fans get it in!

As part of our interview series I got a chance to speak with 2018 signee, Ben VanSumeren.

Ben’s process to becoming a Wolverine started out slow, but finished fast. Originally a Western Michigan commit, Ben made his name known at the Nike Opening Regional event in Ohio where he posted the top score among TE’s. Around this time, new offers were coming in and he decided to explore his options..

In November, Ben decided to commit to the Iowa Hawkeyes, but on December 14 everything changed when Ben was offered by the Michigan Wolverines.

The next day was his official visit, two days later he was committed, and on December 20 he signed his letter of intent.

Trevor McCue: Alright Ben, first off thanks for this, man. You were a name that came up a lot with fans who wanted to get to know guys from this new class a bit more.

Ben VanSumeren: Yeah, no problem!!

TM: Your name came up kind of late in the process. Let’s talk about that whirlwind you went through. Michigan offers, then you’re on campus, then flipping from Iowa in a matter of few days. That had to be crazy, what factored into your decision?

BVS: Being close to home and playing for the school that I’ve grown up wanting to play for my whole life was all really big to me.

TM: So once that Michigan offer came in, you knew what you wanted to do?

BVS: I was angry at first that they had offered so late but I eventually got over it.

TM: That had to be tough, but at least it worked out in the end. You were recruited by Jay Harbaugh correct? Any chance you still play some tight end, or is the move to full back, or a true H-Back as some have suggested?

BVS: Yes Coach Jay recruited me. Their plan for me is to play fullback and some H-back.

TM: You seem like a perfect fit for that H-back position, probably similar to what Khalid Hill was able to do. What excites you most about that position?

BVS: Getting the opportunity to hammer linebackers and cash in some TDs sounds very intriguing to me

TM: Love it! Best of both worlds I guess, because you played linebacker as well. What advantages do you think that gives you as a FB/HB at Michigan?

BVS: I believe it gave me better vision and more opportunity to hit guys and that can translate to the offensive side of the ball as well.
TM: Any player you’ve tried to model your playing style after?

BVS: A player that I’ve tried to model my game after is Evan Engram for the Giants.

TM: Not bad, had a big year for the Giants. Alright, you’ve been a Michigan fan forever, who was your favorite player?

BVS: My favorite player was probably Mike Hart, that’s why I’ve been wearing #20 my whole career.

TM: Hart, that’s awesome, I hadn’t heard that. So you’re probably going to fight hard for that 20 jersey huh?

BVS: Yeah, Coach Harbaugh told me that I’d get it if I came here so hopefully that is still the plan lol. It’s all good if it doesn’t work out that way though.

TM: I hope it does man, would be very cool for you. What do you want Michigan fans to know they can expect from Ben VanSumeren?

BVS: I want them to know that nobody out works me and I’m going to always come ready to lay the wood.

TM: I think that’s an answer all fans can get behind. Alright, we know the football player, what does Ben the regular guy do in his free time?

BVS: I’m kind of a boring guy. I like lifting weights and doing yoga and I’m usually in bed at 9-9:30.

TM: Early bed time, but not before catching up All or Nothing you said right?

BVS: I finished the series today so I’m disappointed about that,

TM: Well, you get to be a part of the real thing soon enough! Ben, thanks for doing this, man, I can tell you’re going to be a fan favorite. I look forward to seeing you come out the tunnel wearing that #20! Good luck on this journey you’re about to start and congratulations!

BVS: Thanks a lot!! It was nice talking to you.

Hey fellow Michigan fans! I’m Trevor McCue, and if you are reading this blog I’m assuming you are like me, a diehard Michigan fan. My father grew up in Michigan, but as an Army Sergeant we lived all over the world. The one connection we had to home was watching Michigan football every Saturday. When he retired, we moved home to West Michigan. I was so excited to be close to the University I loved so much, and actually make trips to the Big House! I am the husband to my amazing wife who I’ve known since 5th grade, and the father to a happy and healthy baby boy. I’m obsessed with team branding and design, which makes being a Michigan fan even better. There is no better look than the maize and blue, the block M, and the winged helmet. I love everything about college football, from recruiting to stats analysis. I can’t thank Rasean Reeves enough for the amazing opportunity to write about all things Michigan Football, and share my passion with you. Go Blue!
